 The
runners for the Snowdon leg, Skipper Jim and Crewman/Runner Paul 'Mac'
scramble enthusiastically ashore and, looking geared up enough to run
to Scotland, they set off on the 9 mile uphill road run to the base of
Snowdon, leaving Craig, Graeme and Gareth to rest ready for the next sailing
leg.
A
gruelling 4 mile ascent greets them, and as they rise to approx. 300m
resident photographer, Andy, is there to meet them (with his trusty assistant,
Julie, sleeping in the car). A quick photo shoot of Paul and Jim with
their imminent conquest, Snowdon, in the background, and they press on
Andy
bites his tongue as he sees the task ahead of them, and on his descent
spots a couple of their previous conquests.
They reach the final ridge, and Jim recommends a sprint
for the last 50 yards to the summit - but they find they are so knackered
that they only manage 5 yards. Summit celebrations, with a well earned
Kendall Mint Cake, ensue. After only a moments rest the runners turn to
descend. Jim informs us that running down mountains "... hurts like crazy
on your legs". Base camp Llanberis, but no sign of the shore crew, Jim
and Paul vent their disgust on the support car, which has been renamed
"The Battle Bus".
The
boys turn for Caernarfon with only a few biscuits to sustain them on the
7 mile road run back to the boat. "That also hurt like hell" (pain definitely
inseparable from this challenge). The team achieve a 13h30 departure only
after a monumental effort from Paul and Jim, Paul looking decidedly fresh,
Jim less so as they collapse into the boat, glad that they can now pass
the torch/torment of running the mountains to Craig and Graeme.
Well
done all..........
